National Children’s Dental Health Month

Sugar-Wars

Happy February and welcome to National Children’s Dental Health Month! During this celebratory month, both children and parents are encouraged to be proactive, rather than reactive, when it comes to oral health. The importance of brushing, flossing, and limiting unhealthy behaviors is heavily reinforced by dental professionals and in educational centers nationwide through the month of February.

The first celebration for children’s dental health occurred on February 3, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1949, the day-long event was expanded to include cities nationwide. It wasn’t until 1955 that the entire month of February was declared National Children’s Dental Health Month. Since then, NCDHM activities have grown to include free dental screenings, museum exhibits, classroom presentations by dentists, and dental office tours for thousands of children across the country.

How can my family participate?

  • This month is a great time to “brush up” on your family’s dental habits. We suggest that you read our previous blog entries and check to make sure that your children are forming healthy habits. Even if you’ve skimmed our content before, it’s important to stay current on age-appropriate information as your child develops.

What is PDGF doing to celebrate this February?

At Pediatric Dentistry of Glens Falls, we promote healthy dental habits all year long. But specifically in honor of NCDHM, we’re hosting the first-ever PDGF Dental Health Poster Contest.

Please ask your child to create a poster promoting dental health and then post it on our Facebook page with your child’s name and age.

Suggested topics include brushing; preventing cavities; healthy food for happy teeth; and dental tips. Our blog is a great resource for ideas.

There will be three age categories for judging:

  • 7 years and under
  • 8-10 years
  • 11 years and up

One winner per category will receive a $50 Visa gift card, and will be featured on our blog, Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram profile. The contest will be judged by your favorite PDGF staff members and will conclude on Monday, February 29. Creativity is encouraged!

We wish your family a successful National Children’s Dental Health Month.
